I used to really like The Offspring, and then something awful happened. I don't really remember how or why - but they were really shit and I would have easily categorised them mentally along with the likes of Bloodhound Gang, Bam Margera and Fred Durst. 'The Rise The Fall, Rage And Grace' however is a pretty OK. Easy to forget though that prior to the likes of Americana; The Offspring were a punk band and this album is clearly the sign of a band that doesn't want to be remembered as a joke.
Ultimately it's not bad, it's consistent and at times you could almost say it sounds like punk. Additionally, despite some fits of pseudo-political Greendayitis; lyrically it's not bad either. I imagine this is the album that genuine fans of The Offspring have been waiting for since SMASH. Fair-weather fans will probably be disappointed. I however, am impressed with what they've done with this, their eighth studio album. The Offspring have not grown up; they've merely (And thankfully) ignored what's de jour and returned to what they do best. They do look like dicks though.
